  3. Fifth Year Subjects Options • No student will be prevented from entry into any third level course by the options structure • Choose subjects that will give you a good balance for your future career choice

  4. Helpful Questions to ask yourself. • What subjects am I most interested in? • Which subjects am I likely to be best at? • How difficult is it to achieve really good results in each subject? • What subjects will I need?

  5. A balanced choice of subjects would proably include… • Irish • English • Mathematics • A continental language • A science (as well as 2 other subjects)

  6. There are three hurdles to college entry • Matriculation Requirement = Basic Entry Requirement • Subject Requirement • Points

  7. 1. Matriculation Requirement • Trinity College Dublin • University College Dublin

  8. 2. Subject Requirement Many courses also have course requirements. This means that particular courses may require particular grades at certain levels, in particular subjects. • Engineering • Scientific courses

  9. 3. Points • Points are allocated to the six best grades of an applicant. • These grades must be achieved in one sitting of the Leaving Certificate Examination. • The number of points required for any course in any year isn’t pre-set by any college

  10. The Third Level System • College choices range from • HigherDegrees • Ordinary Level Degrees • Certificates • Ladder system • There is a place for everyone • P.L.C. = Post Leaving Certificate System • There are courses ranging from “Computer Programming” to “Football Coaching”.

Subjects available at St. Colmcille’s Community School • Applied Maths English Art • Maths Biology Guidance • Physics Chemistry RE • German Engineering PE • Technical Drawing French Irish • Music Home Economics • History Geography • Business Accounting • SPHE Economics • Religious Education Construction Studies

Core Subjects • English • Texts from greek tragedy, shakespeare, texts in poetry and novels and a new module in film studies • Irish • Oral, aural, written and comprehension skills as well as knowledge of literature • Foundation level in the above is not accepted for matric. requirements into Universities…Irish will not be a requirement next year for NUI Universities

  13. Core Subjects • Mathematics • Essential (higher) for many engineering, some mathematical, science and computer courses. • Vital to pass maths... matric. requirement for colleges and universities (Few exceptions ) Eg. Arts in NUI universities

  14. Optional Subjects • Business, Economics and Accountancy • Not essential (but recommended) for business at third level • Economics • Analytical, current topical issues. Good if interested in current affairs and politics Useful for business, economics or commerce courses Professional accounting, banking and insurance bodies have economics in exams

  15. Business and Accounting • Accountancy Course covers preparation, recording, presentation and analysis of financial information (figures) • Business Information on role of enterprise and develop critical understanding of the overall environment in which a business functions (facts)

  16. Art • Art • Art History and appreciation (38%) • Practical Art includes: (62%) • Imaginative composition or still life • Design/ craft work • Life sketching • History and appreciation of art • Essential for some photography, craft, media, architecture and design courses. (fine art etc) • NCAD/DLIAD and other art colleges require portfolios for specific courses

  17. Geography • Acepted as a science subject in TCD • Ordanance surveyor, environmental work, geology or agriculture are examples of careers linked to this area

  18. History • History (1492-1815) or (1815-1993) • Not a required subject for any specific courses • Good preparation for third level as it trains you in extracting relevant facts and presenting them • Could be helpful for careers in area such as jouralism or law

  19. Home Economics • Resource management and consumer studies, food and social studies • All of the above are in part one of the course (80%) • A choice of social skills, textile design or home design (20%) • Writen and practical examination

Continental Languages • French, German • Continental language is required for entry into all NUI Universities • TCD requires english and another language(either Irish or continental) • Many courses which include a language will require LC standard and some (eg. TCD French) will state that you need higher level

  21. Music • Includes; listening 25%, performing 25%, composing 25% and either listening/ performing/composing for final 25% • Essential for music courses (Most music degrees will require an audition etc)

  22. Science Subjects Physics • Physics includes forms of energy, light and wave motion, current electricity,electronics, mechanics etc • Important to have a good understanding of maths • Required in most engineering and electronics courses • Most science, engineering and technologicalcourses will require at least one lab science.

  23. Chemistry • Chemistry includes chemical bonding, environmental chemistry, rates of reaction etc • Chemistry recommended for health sciences such as medicine,chemical engineering and is part of general science and nursing courses

  24. Biology • Study of plants, living things and animals • Human physiology, microbiology and genetics • Relevant for medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy etc

  25. Technical Drawing • Two papers • Plain and Solid Geometry..p.1 • Practical application of paper one..p.2 • (perspective drawing, roof geometry, roads layout etc) • Useful for achitecture, graphic and interior design, engineering etc

  26. Engineering Practical Exam Project Work Theory Exam Not a requirement for engineering but would be an advantage.

  27. Construction Studies Topics Include: Built Environment Construction/Design Useful…Construction/Engineering

  28. Applied Maths • Maths used to understand complexities of physical world • Linked maths/physics • Can be used as a sciense requirement for some courses

  29. What next ???? If unsure about course area choose; Maths English Irish Foreign Language Laboratory Science 2/3 other subjects……… Students pick 7….you are marked out of best 6 for your points

  30. If you have an idea of area of vocational interest • Check University/ College matriculation requirements • Be aware of any specific subjects needed for the particular course…eg. Lab science for computer science(BSc) UCD etc • Finally, look at points and where aptitude lies (Junior Cert results and subjects which you are good at and also enjoy)
