Innate Behaviors • Innate behavior - a behavior that is performed correctly with no previous experience. • Researches have observed that digger wasps raised in isolation build nests in the same way as in the wild.
This concept of innate behavior does not mean that such behaviors are only determined by genes. • Even the most programmed behavior is influenced by environment.
Graylag Goose • Fixed acction pattern (FAP) - an innate behavior that occurs as an unchangeable sequence of actions. • An animal can only perform a FAP from beginning to end. • A FAP is usually triggered by a specific stimulus.
Rhythms of Behavior • Animals exhibit a variety of regularly repeated behaviors. • These behaviors are synchronized to changes in the environment. • Circadian rhythm – daily routine that cycles about every 24 hours. • They are controlled by an organism’s biological clock.
