Rings are named in alphabetical order • Saturn’s rings are the largest and most spectacular • Rings are believed to be pieces of comets, asteroids, or shattered moons that broke before they reached the planet • Ring particle sizes range from tiny, dust-sized icy grains to a few particles that are as large as mountains
Galileo Galilei discovered Saturn in 1610 when he looked to the sky and saw with a simple telescope a round planet with two bumps on the sides • He called these “bumps” “ears.” He didn’t live long enough to discover what they really were. Who discovered Saturn?

Over 900 images of Saturn’s moons. • Voyager 2: Launched August 20, 1977. Returned August 26, 1981. It was a “fly-by”. Over 1100 images of Saturn’s moons.
