Backwards Design: Starting from Learning Outcomes Brian and Michelle Teaching Enhancement Workshop 2012
Key Questions • What is “backwards design”? • What does it mean to “start from learning outcomes”? • Essentially, backwards design posits that effective instruction begins with the end –specific learning outcomes-- in mind. • Learning Centered Teaching requires that we identify this outcome, this ultimate objective (or set of objectives), and figure out ways to facilitate student accomplishment of them. • Teaching, then, is about planning and executing an agenda and strategy for student learning, and collecting tangible evidence of such along the way. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xjzglzz7Ls
The Backwards Design Model:Three Stages, Three Questions • What is the desired result; the specific learning outcome(s)? • What evidence is necessary to determine if the outcomes are accomplished? • Think about assessment –what constitutes acceptable evidence of student understanding or proficiency? • What are the means to the ends? • What teaching/learning strategies can be used to enable students to accomplish the objectives?
Implementation • Practical considerations: • How do we define or know our learning outcomes? • Is this documented somewhere? Do you make it up yourself? • How and where do we introduce them? • How do we reinforce them? • How do we accomplish them? • How do we know we accomplished them?
