Design of Modern Deepwater Drilling Rigs Speaker: Er. SeowTiangKeng Senior Manager at Keppel FELS Professional Engineer and Licensed High Voltage Switching Engineer Er. Seow Tiang Keng is amongst the few established engineers with hands-on experience in a wide variety of projects, spanning disciplines, industries and countries. This talk discusses on the Design of Modern Deepwater Semi-submersible Drilling Oil Rigs and how the combined disciplines of Naval Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Automation are integrated.
Synopsis for “Design of Modern Deepwater Drilling Oil Rigs” _________________________ Er. SeowTiangKeng, Professional Engineer and Licensed High Voltage Switching Engineer, started his employment with the then Keppel Shipyard Limited in December 1969. He has served in various engineering staff positions during his 40 years of employment with Keppel. In addition to his shipbuilding and repairs experiences, he undertook the electrical design of the 3 phases of development in Keppel TuasShipyard. He built the ‘fast track’ power plant in Suzhou and 115kV switchyard in Manila and took charge of the construction and commissioning of pulverized coal power plant in China. He also singlehandedly set up the Facility Maintenance business of Keppel Industrial Engineering (KIE) and was involved in many other Projects in Vietnam, Brazil, Russia, etc. In 2000, he was invited to manage the Electrical & Instrumentation Section at Keppel FELS. His transfer also coincided with the rig’s electrical system change from DC to AC drives. Very quickly, he learned this new electronic inverter drives and dynamic positioning for deepwater rigs. He is one of the few Engineers in the industry to date, whom has intimate understanding of the electrical and electronic systems installed on modern deepwater drilling oil rigs being built in present times. He will be sharing his last 10 years experience of drilling rig designs, drilling equipment, electrical and electronic system development and modernization of existing oil rigs, which moved from the decades old DC drives to Variable Frequency Drives and Dynamic Positioning for deep water exploration. Publication: Author of Singapore Standard CP47:1989, Code of Practice for Temporary Electrical Installations for Shipbuilding and Shiprepairing Yards. Speaker: Er. Seow Tiang Keng (Professional Engineer and Licensed High Voltage Switching Engineer)
