College or University: Essential Differences • Universities grant degrees such as Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Engineering; • Colleges grant diplomas: Graphic Arts Diploma, Paramedic Diploma, Dental Hygiene Diploma, Child & Youth Worker Diploma, Early Childhood Education Diploma; • Some colleges also grant degrees which combine the practical nature of college programs with the sometimes more abstract nature of university programs; • College diplomas tend to be very specific; universities degrees tend to be more general and lead to many different professions.
Possible Considerations • How long do you want to study at the post secondary level? • What are your long term goals? • How do you learn best? • What are your strengths and passion right now? • Do you want to remain close to Kingston? • What are the financial considerations?
Process & Timelines • All grade 12 graduates will be assigned a counsellor • Post Secondary Updates: monthly & online; schedule of post secondary visits. • Student Services page has the most current info…save in your favourites! • LCVI starts the process for you by creating the data file in October…don’t worry; we’ve got it covered!
Process & Timelines - Continued • PINS – college & university • All applications done by holiday break in December • Show me the $ - college application is $95.00 • University application is $130.00; additional choice is $44.00 • Both fees due at application time; credit card, money order. • Deadlines [really, really] matter! • Out of Province applications – special attention to admission requirements and any further additional admission criteria…specific institutional websites best and most current source of information.
What do I need to do to select my program? • University & college calendars • Websites • Liaison visits; UIP, CIP • Post Secondary Update • Campus visits • Be prepared to invest time in this very significant decision!
Scholarships • 2 types: grades based and extra-curricular / grades based; • Generally, no application needed for grades based scholarships; • Both college & university • Bursaries • Deadlines really matter here too! • Information coming in daily, websites, file drawers in Student Services
Scholarships requiring a school-based nomination • Very general scholarships; • Specific college and university based; • Resume – handed in Student Services • Scholarship Committee will meet and applicants will be notified; • Firm Deadline for Resume; you may update throughout the year. • Continue portfolio building
TOEFL • English Language Learners must write the TOEFL test; • More information around dates to follow. • Post Secondary Update has website link; please familiarize yourself with it; • Individual universities and policies.
