  1. Current event journals • Which of your journal entries/current events do you believe is most interesting, shocking, powerful, or important? • Think about one that you would like to briefly summarize to the class.

  2. Racial Justice and the future of race relations • A Life Engaged • Excerpt from Desmond & Emirbayer (2010): Racial Domination/Racial Progress. • “No, you weren't there…blood is not on your hands” • Slavery • Genocide • Manifest destiny • Racist citizenship requirements • Exploitation • Lynchings • Etc

  3. Personal and Civil responsibility • None of us are responsible for the wrongs inflicted to-or by- our ancestors, but to what degree are we responsible for repairing the damage? • Personal responsibility: connected to things that are directly asked of you and wrongs you have committed • Civic responsibility: connected to your ability and power to change your community and beyond • Our connection to the solution, to justice, and to help those who suffer

  4. “Perhaps our hands are not as clean as we once thought” • What is our connection to global poverty and injustice towards workers? • Where do our goods and resources come from? • Who do our actions indirectly effect? • “..Doing nothing in the face of oppression is the equivalent to doing something, a very large something to help the oppressors” (Desmond and Emirbayer, 2010) • Racial domination persists largely due to ignorance and indifference • What is the difference?

  5. Indifference or action • Having taken this course, you now know more about race and racial domination than the average American, and even the average sociologist • Origins and history • The persistent significance of race • Race as a social construction • Forms of prejudice and discrimination • Complexity of race and identity issues • The importance of critical thought and analysis in dealing with race and ethnicity
