Our first visit... and our first day… have a massive impact!
Student Ambassadors are a key factor in helping people to make the right choice, but.... What is Keele and Why is Keele?
What is Keele? A Historic Place! The University College of North Staffordshirewas founded 1949, and opened in 1950 … founded by Lord A D Lindsay of Birker, Christian socialist, educationalist, politician and visionary Forest of Light: “Search for truth in the company of friends” Royal Charter 1962 – University of Keele The first post-war New University – the 20th in the UK A “one-off” (unaligned) and the prototype of the modern “green-field campus university” emulated by many in the 1960s A radical educational breakthrough in inter-disciplinary study, collegiality and community “The Keele Experiment”
What is Keele? A Different Place! In 1950 157 students arrived at the UK’s largest campus Fewer than 1,000 students on campus until the first wave of expansion in the early 1960’s; in the 1970’s still fewer than 2,000 students; until the early 1990’s still fewer than 3,000 students; the big expansion began in 1995; we now have 7,500+ full-time students and 9,500 in total We are near peak capacity of about 10,000, substantially over-subscribed and getting more and more popular A comparatively small/medium-sized university in numbers But a big university in terms of history, impact and reputation Are we the UK’s favourite University?
What is Keele? A Different Way! Exceptionally high on-campus residence Always one of the smaller major UK universities The original Foundation Year 1950 to 1993 gave an introductory year across all disciplines A high percentage of undergraduates study dual honours with the most extensive combinations in the UK The need to “create” our community and social life here in the Bubble means that we gain lifelong friendships Our green campus is precious – in all meanings of the word “green”
Keele’s Strategic Map 2012-2015 • Keele Vision: “Keele will continue to be one of the UK’s leading campus-based university communities” We have six Strategic Aims
To be a broad-based university of about 10,000 students, recognised internationally for excellence in education and research • To provide the highest quality experience to a diverse student body • To deliver international excellence and impact in focused areas of research
To contribute positively to the society, economy, culture and health of the communities we serve through our research, education and enterprise • To develop an environmentally aware and sustainable outward-facing campus community • To manage and develop resources effectively to ensure the university's sustainability and development
What is Keele? Keele is for Life! CAMPUS COMMUNITY FLEXIBLE STUDY We become FOREVER: KEELE
