How didit happen? • The storm was a combination of high spring tideand a severe European windstorm • The water damaged the seadefences (dykes) • The Netherlands is partly below sea-level andrelies on thosedefences
Damage • The floods put large parts of South Holland, Zeeland and Noord-Brabant under water • The heaviest death toll was recorded at the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee • 1,835 deaths and evacuation of 70,000+ people
