  1. Honors Bellwork • “The Scarlet Ibis” can be viewed as an example of Southern literature, which is characterized in part by its emphasis on details of time and place, the importance of family and community, an exploration of the past, and a sense of moral dilemma. How are these characteristics evident in this story? Cite details from the text.

  2. Standard Bellwork • Which has a greater impact on “The Necklace”– the importance of status or the role of fate, or chance? Use details from the story to support your answer.

  3. Common Mistakes in Your Writing!

  4. Common Mistakes • Their vs. There vs. They’re • “They’re” is a contraction for “they are”, there is a location, and their is possessive. • Effect vs. Affect • "Effect" is typically a noun, meaning some consequence or result. "Affect" is typically a verb, meaning to bring about an effect. Example: The effects of second hand smoke affect your lungs! • You're vs. Your • “You’re” is a contraction for "you are" and “your” is possessive.

  5. Common Mistakes • Are vs. Our • “are” is a verb, “our” is a pronoun. • Are you coming to our party?? • Lose vs. Loose • If your pants are too loose, you might lose your pants! • Too vs. to vs. two • “Too” means also, “to” is a preposition, “two” is a number! • Could of, would of, should of • Correct: could have, would have, should have Or could’ve, would’ve, should’ve

  6. Common Mistakes • Then vs. Than • Then shows sequence or next step. • Than is used with comparison. • Use apostrophes!! • Remember that an apostrophe should be used for a contraction and to show ownership! • Its vs. It’s • It’s is a contraction for “it is”. Its is used any other time! • Be careful with through, throughout, though, thou, thought, and thorough: They are all different words!

  7. Common Mistakes • Choose vs. chose • Choose is present tense. • Chose is past tense. • After I chose blue shoes yesterday, it is easy to choose the red ones today! • Past vs. passed • In the past, I have passed all my English exams! • Worse vs. worst • Yesterday was the worst day ever. • There has never been a worse day! • Pay attention to the way you spell DEFINITELY! • It definitely isn’t spelled defiantly or definitly!

  8. Common Mistakes The easiest way to avoid these problems is to read your work aloud BEFORE you turn it in! If it doesn’t make sense to you, it certainly won’t to me!
