Suggestion of Beamsales process Production volume optimization through web-voting
Production volume optimization Local designers, artists, communities Local associations Large department store (e.g. Stockmann) BEAM Design Agency (JY) Small design shops (e.g. Design Forum) Photographer Agency Internet firm
Step 1: Search for local design (in Uganda) Fieldwork to find interesting local design items: -local fashion like clothes -local art works -ceramic and handcraft Fieldwork management and choice of local products by Design Agency Local designers, artists, communities Local associations BEAM Design Agency (JY)
Step 2: Sustainable design by Beam 2. Design Agency develops chosen local designs as well as designs its own products Products created in the system by local independent stakeholders (under control of Design Agency) and Beam Local designers, artists, communities Local associations BEAM Design Agency (JY)
Step 3: Field photography of local design 3. Design Agency orders Photographer agency to film and take photos from the chosen local design items in the field (e.g. local fashion clothes filmed with local models/environment) Creation of a ‘design catalogue’ . Step 4: Web-voting for preferred designs 4. Design Agency chooses photos of certain local design items to be published by an Internet firm, which then organizes a web-based voting (e.g. website, social media) for the most preferred items. Based on the votes and feedback comments given by people and public, the most ‘liked’ designs are chosen for further development and large scale production. The idea: ‘Design elections.’ Local designers, artists, communities Local associations BEAM Design Agency (JY) Photographer Agency Internet firm
Step 5: Quota sales of the most preferred designs 5. Now that the customer preferences/reactions towards sustainable design items are known and predefined, the production volume may be optimized to equal the signaled customer demand. Large department stores and small design shops in Helsinki may thus be willing to do quota sales of local design products with no cumulated stocks. The probability of producing only a quantity that will be sold out increases. Optimization of production volume decreases the risk of financial loss and prevents production of items, which customers will not buy. Notes. • Internet firm could actually be a communication unit of Design agency • Photographer agency could also be a local actor (e.g. Ugandan photo agency) • Sellers like Stockmann for sustainable design products in Helsinki would have an incentive to sell the items as part of their charity programs (Stockmann’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategy is already in process) • Lindex (owned by Stockmann) is already involved in ’fair trade clothing’ -> brand value and firm identity as incentives • The key in the Beam sales process is to know beforehand the customer attitude and some signals about preferences before the production starts. Material use, labour use and costs are optimized and risk of financial loss for the Design agency decreases • It is easier to get the sustainable design items sold in several sales channels, when there is some kind of proof that people already ‘like’ the products
