Chapter 2: Matter & Energy By: Jessica Alphonse
Energy Energy in chemistry is the capacity to do work. Its also a force of power that generates life, make new compounds, and a change of energy. Physical & Chemical change involves energy. chemical-new substance is made physical- affects physical properties of matter. There are many ways energy is formed. by heat being released or absorbed by Temperature Kinetic energy- energy of an object that’s due to the object’s match.
Temperature & Heat Heat- a kind of energy in which transferred between objects that’s at different temperature. In chemical changes, energy can be transferred involving heat. In physical change, it continues until a solid turns into a liquid. On a warm day, energy cannot be released because its unable to transfer from cool to warm objects. Temperature- a measurement of how hot or cold something is. Temperature is measured by Fahrenheit and Celsius.
Scientific Method The Scientific method is a series of steps in order to solve scientific problems. The steps include forming a hypothesis, collecting data , testing the hypothesis and having a conclusion. Hypothesis- a theory based on the observations before the experiment is tested. Your hypothesis can be right or wrong.
Calculations in Chemistry In order to get the right measurements and calculations, you need the right tools. For example, beakers, buret, graduated cylinder. You would also need accuracy & precision. Accuracy- a description of how close it is to the actual value. Precision- the exactness of the measurement.
Significant Figures A decimal place determining where to round off to make a precise measurement. Using the significant figure can be useful to get the exact answer. Significant figure- a measurement that consist of all the digits known with certainty and precision. When you solve to identify the significant figures in a calculator, you must make sure the results are correct.
