  3. From controlled economy to free market and back • 1920 – Labor parties collaborate and create the HISTADRUT – General Federation of Jewish Worker • 1924 – Forth Aliyah began. Free enterprising seems the best way to build the National Home. • 1927-1928 – Economic crisis, unemployment and emigration. • Recovering from the crisis with National funds and controlled development. The Histadrut became the major tool of the Zionist movement.

The revisionist party • Ze'ev Jabotinsky (1880-1940), author, orator, soldier and charismatic leader • Emphasizing Political Zionism and the importance of Armed forces • Betar youth movement ("League of Joseph Trumpeldor") – 1923 • The article “The Iron Wall, We and the Arabs” – 1923 • The Union of Zionists-Revisionists is established as a party in the Zionist World Organization - 1925 • Attempt to succeed Weitzman at the Zionist congress 1931 • Leaving Zionist movement – 1935 • Link With the Etzel - 1937

  5. The Fifth Aliyah 1933-1939 • Doubling the population from 250,000 to 500,000. • The Transfer agreement and the Arlozorov assassination • The Revisionists party loses power. The Labor party became the dominant party in Zionism • The ‘Wall and Watchtower’ settlements • Illegal immigration - Haapalah

The defense forces • The Hagana -1920 • Yitzchak Sadeh’s commando group – Fosh - 1937 • Wingate’s Special Night Squads - 1937 • Palmach, permanently mobile force - 1941 • National Military Organization – Etzel or Irgun – 1930, 1937 • Fighters for the Freedom of Israel - Lehi or Stern Gang – 1940
