SCU: Two NSF Projects Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) • To establish ECS course in SJ high schools • Amount: $1M • Duration: Three years • Start Date: July 2010 Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) • To provide grad students to support ECS courses • Amount: $850K • Duration: Three years • Start Date: Sept 2011

BPC Project Overview For Students • Provide greater access for high school students to study computing. • Increased knowledge of the various topics and career opportunities within computing. • Provide a curriculum that is engaging and fun. • Increase the number and diversity of students who pursue careers in computing.

  4. BPC Project Overview For Students • Understand how computational thinking is used in other disciplines and careers. • Increased problem-solving skills. • Increased interest and motivation forfurther study of computing.

  5. BPC Project Overview For Teachers • Increased understanding of the principles of computational thinking. • Increased effective use of discovery based pedagogy in the classroom delivery of the material.

  7. BPC Project OverviewWHAT NSF PROVIDES Curriculum Training (2 cohort groups) • 4 weeks (19 days) in summer • 4 Saturdays during AY • 2 days of follow-up Workshop stipends for teachers • $200/day School Support • $3,000/school per year Lego Mindstorm Kits • 30 kits/school

  9. GK-12 Project Overview For Teachers • Technical support and • General assistance (presentations, test preparation, grading, etc). For High School Students • Strengthened ECS experience. For Graduate Students • Improved communication, instruction, leadership and teamwork skills.
