SCU: Two NSF Projects Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) • To establish ECS course in SJ high schools • Amount: $1M • Duration: Three years • Start Date: July 2010 Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) • To provide grad students to support ECS courses • Amount: $850K • Duration: Three years • Start Date: Sept 2011
BPC Project Overview For Students • Provide greater access for high school students to study computing. • Increased knowledge of the various topics and career opportunities within computing. • Provide a curriculum that is engaging and fun. • Increase the number and diversity of students who pursue careers in computing.
BPC Project Overview For Students • Understand how computational thinking is used in other disciplines and careers. • Increased problem-solving skills. • Increased interest and motivation forfurther study of computing.
BPC Project Overview For Teachers • Increased understanding of the principles of computational thinking. • Increased effective use of discovery based pedagogy in the classroom delivery of the material.
