What is a counterargument? • When you counter-argue, you consider an opposing argument against your thesis or some aspect of your reasoning. • You need to show that you understand the opposite viewpoint of your position and then counter it by providing contrasting evidence or by finding mistakes and inconsistencies in the logic of the opposing argument.
Why include a counterargument? When writing a persuasive letter, it is important to always consider the opposing argument. • Allows you to anticipate doubts and pre-empt objections that a skeptical reader might have • Presents you as the kind of person who weighs alternatives before taking a position • Demonstrates that you confront difficulties instead of sweeping them under the rug • Shows you are more interested in discovering the truth than winning a point.
