History and Origin • Columbus Day • October 12, 1492: Christopher Columbus discovered America • Christopher Columbus • An Italian explorer, who wanted to prove that the earth is not flat • Convinced Queen Isabella of Spain to sponsor his voyage. • Set sail on the three ships and sailed west. • Landed on Bahamian island Guanahani on 10.12.1492 • Thought that he came to India • Named the native people “Indians” • Made four voyages to the New World • The New Continent was named after an Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci in 1792

5. Tradition of Celebrating • Italian and Spanish style decorations and costumes • Travel and admire the beautiful foliage season • Celebrate new harvest • Raises the issues of the native Indians Parade Folk Dance

Food Spanish and Italian cuisines • As Columbus was born in Italy and traveled to the New World from Spain, people focus on Spanish and Italian cuisines during this celebration. • Common ingredients are: water, vinegar, wine, olive oil, molasses, cheese, honey, raisins, rice, garlic, almonds, sea biscuits, dry legumes such as chickpeas, lentils, beans, salted and barreled sardines, anchovies, dry salt cod and pickled or salted meats, salted flour • Fogon – the equipment for fire used by Columbus during his voyages

National Foundation Day in Korea National Foundation Day October 3rd in B.C. 2333: Tangun, mythological hero founded Korea The Tale of Tangun • Hwan-Woong, son of God, wanted to help people • A Tiger and a Bear wanted to be human • God made them suffer to win the honor to become human • A Bear survived and became a Woman after • A son, Tangun was born to Hwan-Woong and the Woman • That child was the ancestor to all Korean people • He named the country CHOSUN. • That was the first ever country to be founded on the Korean Peninsula in B.C. 2333.

History and Origin • Thanksgiving Day • The fourth Thursday of November • Pilgrims and Native Americans in New England in the early 17th century • The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 by the English Pilgrims who had founded the Plymouth Plantation. • The Pilgrims marked the occasion by feasting with their Native American guests who brought gifts of food as a gesture of goodwill. • Gradually the custom prevailed among New Englanders to annually celebrate Thanksgiving after the harvest.

Tradition of Celebrating • Children dressed in Pilgrim costume, complete with bonnets or tall hats, dark clothes, and shoes with large silver-colored buckles. • Thanksgiving derived from much older traditions of celebrating the autumn harvest. • The cornucopia is a typical emblem of Thanksgiving abundance that dates to ancient harvest festivals. • Many communities also decorate their churches with fruit, flowers, and vegetables at Thanksgiving • Macy’s in New York City and Gimbel’s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began to sponsor lavish parades. • The custom of watching football games on Thanksgiving Day

Food • Celebrating a plentiful harvest • Turkey, bread-crumb stuffing, cranberry sauce, squash, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie • The rustic virtues of the Pilgrims • Emphasizing the natural bounty that greeted early settlers in their adopted homeland • Later groups of immigrants to North America often adapted the traditional holiday menu to fit their own tastes. • Many Americans digest their holiday meal while watching football games on television.

Chu Sok in KoreaAugust 15th in Lunar Calendar • Origin of Chu Sok • "The Three Kingdom" history book in 32 AD • The king of Shilla, King You Ree held weaving competition between two groups of women after harvest • Everyone enjoyed the feast and celebrated it with songs and dance. • Tradition of Celebrating • Families from all around Korea pack up and head on the road to visit their families’ ancestral sites. • A few days before the Chu Suk holiday begins families prepare special dishes for the ancestral site memorial. • After service is finished, family members eat the food together and celebrate.
