  2. Brief History On July 18, 1994, First Ministers signed the agreement on Internal Trade Came into force on July 1, 1995 Includes government departments, agencies, commissions, and crown corporations of the 10 provinces and three territories and the federal government

  3. Groups/ Countries Involved Most of Canada is involved: Newfoundland and Labrador NWT Nova Scotia Yukon PEI B.C New Brunswick Alberta Quebec Manitoba Ontario

  4. Main Objective To reduce and eliminate to the extent possible barriers to the free movement of persons, goods, services, and investment within Canada to establish an open efficient and stable domestic market

  5. Advantages Non-discrimination Transparency Openness Accessibility Funds the school board, and also the health and social services obligations to remove additional barriers through future negotiations Opens up Domestic market Prohibits the establishments of new barriers to internal trade

  6. Disadvantages It has failed to ensure free trade within Canada Virtually unknown to most Canadians including business people, officials and politicians Those aware of the agreement are skeptical of its effectiveness

  7. Benefits to Canada Canada trading within itself saves money Benefits the Canadian market/economy (buy and sell within Canada) Helps other provinces and territories with goods, and resources unavailable to them

  8. Interesting Facts Nunavut is not a signatory to the AIT and has observer status
