What is an STI? • STI - Infection spread from person to person through sexual contact • major health problem for young people between ages 15-19 years old. • How can STIs be transmitted? • through bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids, or blood; exchanged from: oral, vaginal, and/or anal sex
Common Symptoms: - Bumps, blisters, sores, swelling, or itching near mouth or genitals - Skin rash - Painful urination - Discharge from penis or vagina - Irregular bleeding (women) - Aches, pains, fever, chills - Asymptomatic or no symptoms at all

Practicing Abstinence Abstinence: deliberate avoidance of sexual activity, the ONLY guaranteed form of protection from STIs! Remember: 1) Condoms can help prevent STIs but do not work 100% of the time 2) Getting tested regularly when you are engaging in sexual activity can help ensure your sexual health
Responsible Behavior • Choose partners wisely • Avoid being alone with someone if you are not comfortable • Know your limits and share with your partner • Be assertive • See a doctor if you think you may have an STI, do NOT continue having sex!
F.Y.I. Using condoms correctly can help protect against most sexually transmitted infections, but they are not 100% fool proof. *The only way to avoid is to abstain*

Genital Herpes Symptoms • Painful itchy blisters in genital area • Fever • Burning when urinating during outbreak Treatment • No cure • Medication can relieve symptoms Overview: Skin to skin contact, does not only come from intercourse!! There are 2 types: 1 – fever or blister on mouth or face 2 – blisters on sex organs
Genital Warts-HPV Overview: - Spread from all forms of sexual contact, not just intercourse - Very contagious and causes by the Human Papilloma Virus - Over 1 million new cases each year Symptoms • Painful warts in genial area 3-6 months after exposed Treatment • Medication • Freezing or surgery to remove warts
Syphilis Overview: -Spread through sexual contact Increases chances of HIV infection There are 3 stages: 1 – Painless sores where bacteria entered 2- Rashes, bumps, warts where the bacteria entered 3 – Destruction of internal organs Symptoms • Red sores near genitals • Flu like symptoms Treatment • Antibiotics
