History of Polo • Polo is said to have originated in China about 2,000 years ago • The name of the game came from the word pholo, the Tibet word for ballgame • The first polo game took place in 600B.C, it was between the Turkomans and Persians (Turkomans won) • By 1500’s the game was established in India by Emperor Babur • In the mid 19th century polo was discovered by British tea planters in Manipur on the Burmese border with India • They made the world’s first polo club in Silchar, west of Manipur • England’s first polo club Monmouthshire was founded in 1872 by Capitan Francis Herbert
