Introduction • The next-generation universal home • It is an example of how housing may evolve over the next 15 to 20 years in response to present and future demographic and marketing trends • Demographic Trends • Change in household type • Increment of aged population • Civil rights movement for people with disabilities • A growing community of designers, researchers, and educators worldwide is recognizing the importance of UD • Housing of the future must possess an ability to adapt to the differing needs and requirements of the users, no matter their age or strength of agility

Universal Design and Housing • Universal Design • It respects, values, and strives to accommodate the broadest possible spectrum of human ability in the design of all products and environments • It helps eliminate • the need for special features and spaces for a specific group of people • additional expense that specialness and special products often generate • Universal design in housing • Only for people with disability?  Also useful to all members of family • It is also marketable

Conclusion • Furthering the understanding about universal design is critical • through projects like the next-generation universal home • We saw some prominent universal features to true holistic UD • And all of these designs reflect a belief in the marketing advantage of UD • However, many challenges remain for industry-wide adoption of UD • Due to a lack of understanding about or even an awareness of UD
