Good to GreatSynopsis MilosKustudija – Matt Zaney – Dustin Pace
Level 5 Leadership • Every good-to-great company had Level 5 leadership during pivotal transition years. • Humility + Will = Level 5 leader • Coach K (Duke) • Greg Popovich (Spurs) • More Plow horse than show horse • We all have the potential to evolve into Level 5 leaders
First Who…Then What? • Getting the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off of the bus). • When in doubt, don’t hire – keep looking. • Be sure you don’t simply have someone in the wrong seat. • Put your best people on your biggest opportunities, not your biggest problems.
Confront the Brutal Facts…yet never lose faith • Confront the brutal facts of current reality. • Create a culture where people can be herd. • Leadership does not begin just with vision. • Do not de-motivate your people. • Stockdale Paradox.
Hedgehog Concept…simplicity within three circles • The Hedgehog Concept is not a goal, strategy, or intention; it is an understanding. • Good-to-Great companies founded their strategies on understanding of three dimensions-three circles. • Hedgehog Concept ≠ Core Competence. • Fanatical consistency
Cultured Discipline • A culture of discipline is not just about action • It’s about getting disciplined people engaged in disciplined thought and then taking disciplined action • Culture of discipline involves duality • One hand requires adherence to a consistent system, other hand gives you freedom/responsibility within that framework • Single most impt form of discipline for sustained results is fanatical adherence to Hedgehog concept • More so, it’s the willingness to let go of things that fall outside the circle(s)
Good to Great to Built to Last • Built to Last – previous book focused on what’s needed for newbies to survive in the long run • First, have to have strong core values. It’s a must. • Need to exist for more than mere purpose of financial success to transcend good to great • This purpose doesn’t have to be strictly defined SO LONG AS the purpose itself is of greater meaning than profit • Do things necessary to get yourself from good to great, then concentrate on building to last
Nothing Is Impossible • We’re given the shot at Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness – nowhere does it say anything about a guarantee of happiness, there is no Federal Department of Happy • The choice is yours • Everyone has dreams, but the ones with goals are much easier to spot – they’re usually the ones having their dreams…just some food for thought http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MFn7ptHQG0&feature=related
