Do a bell ringer on scientific notation. Group students according to the bell ringer or pretest. Give them instructions to refer to. • The first worksheet I gave them was horrible…had instructions on it. Start with the one I made cuzits better
Objectives • SWBAT • Go from scientific notation to standard notation. • + and - exponents • Go from standard notation to scientific notation. • Numbers > 1 and numbers <1
Bell Work 9/13/12 – 3 min Write the following numbers in scientific notation. • 2300 • 357 • 93,000,000 Write the following numbers in standard notation. 4. 3.50 x 107 6.492 x 10-4 6. 5.10 x 10-2
Schedule • Check & Review Homework • Scientific notation notes • Practice scientific notation
Scientific Notation • A way to write really big or small numbers.
Scientific Notation Standard Notation • Look at the exponent. Move the decimal over that many places. • POSITIVE exponent means a BIG (>1) number, move the decimal to the left. • Negativeexponent means a smallnumber (<1), move the decimal to the left. • Rewrite the number. Include a zero to the left of the decimal if the number is less than one.
Scientific Notation Standard Notation • Write the coefficient. • Look at the exponent. Move the decimal over that many places. • POSITIVE exponent means a BIG (>1) number, move the decimal to the left. • Negativeexponent means a smallnumber (<1), move the decimal to the left. • Rewrite the number. Add a zero to the left of the decimal if the number is less than one.
Common Mistakes • Move the decimal…don’t just add zeros. • Don’t just add a certain number of zeros, count how many times you move the decimal. • Your final answer might not have any zeros. • If the coefficient is negative, that just means your answer is negative. • Leaving zeros off at the end of small number
Standard Notation Scientific Notation • Move the decimal until there is only one nonzero number to the left of it. • Count how many times you moved. Write that as your exponent. • If the number was greater than 1, your exponent is positive. • If the number was less than 1, your exponent is negative. • Rewrite the number. Include a zero to the right of the decimal if the number is less than one.
Common Mistakes? • Including sig figs
What’s on scientific method test? • Scenario (like SpongeBob) • List steps of scientific method • Create experiment • Define independent variable, dependent variable, control variable, experimental group, control group, observation, scientific law, scientific theory, placebo & placebo effect • 3 types of graphs
