Brief history of Sikhism • It was founded in the 15th century by Guru Nanak in India and was followed by Nine Gurus (divine teachers). • They believe there is only one God. • They believe in the five K’s which are kesh (turban), kangha (wooden comb), Kara (steel bracelet), katcha (special underwear) and kirpaan(a short sword)
Beliefs of nursing • Modesty and privacy should be highly respected. • Do not interrupt a praying patient for routine care • Be sensitive to the significance of the Sikh's five K's, (religious symbols or articles of faith) • They prefer to be catered for by a nurse of the same sex. • They believe and practice good personal hygiene.
Brief history of Hare Krishna • Founded in the 15th century (1486) by ChaitanyaMahaprabhu who first thought that Krishna was the supreme lord over any other god. • He exhibited it through dancing and chanting publicly and other people followed him.
BELIEFS ABOUT NURSING • They believe strongly prevention is rather better than cure, therefore they undergo regular medical check up and develop preventive health measures such as exercising. • Surgical operations are their last resort. • To promote good health, sick Hare Krishnas suspend their work and take rest.
Beliefs cont’d • They believe that Krishna’s intervention is essential in promoting good health and not only medications. • Good health results naturally when they live and eat in a regulated spiritual lifestyle and therefore are strict vegetarians. • The body will naturally be healthy and strong when the mind is filled with spiritual thoughts free from greed and envy.
Brief history of Buddhism • Founded in the 6th century BC on the teachings of Gautama Siddhartha (the Buddha) and focuses on personal spiritual development.
Beliefs of nursing • They believe alcohol and meat(strict vegetarians) are intoxicants to the body. • They frown upon abortions • They practice birth control methods • Allowing the person to die in a natural, peaceful manner is considered more essential.
