What is Pure Performance? • Drug, alcohol, tobacco and steroid prevention education. • Pure Performance Goals: • Educate our student athletes on the dangers of substance abuse on their health and athletic performance. • Educate students with simple strategies for saying “no” • Meet Oregon State Law, which requires drug, alcohol and steroid education for all Oregon high school students.
Drug and Alcohol Data from a LCSD High School: • 2010 Oregon Wellness Survey: • Survey’s Oregon’s 6th, 8th and 11th grade students • Sponsored by the Oregon Department of Human Services • Findings: (Junior Class) • 41.2% had used alcohol in the past 30 days • 22.1% had used tobacco in the past 30 days • 33.7% had used marijuana in the past 30 days • 33.7% had used “any illicit” drug in the past 30 days
Drug and Alcohol Data: • More Findings: • More Juniors said that tobacco (89%) has a greater perception of risk than marijuana (25.6%) • Juniors said their parents would disapprove more of cigarettes (96.5%) than both alcohol (75.6%) and marijuana (82.1%) • Between 70 and 75% of Juniors said that alcohol, tobacco and marijuana were easily available to them
Code of Ethics Key Points
Code of Ethics: Key Points • How does an athlete become ineligible? • Grades • Attendance • Behavior • Ineligible Athletes: • May practice with the team • May not participate in contests, dress down, or travel with the team if school is to be missed • May sit with the team at home contests
Grades: • Underclassmen must be taking and passing at least 6 classes • Seniors with 20+ credits must take and pass at least 5 classes • One F or below a 2.0 GPA = program of academic assistance • More than one F = ineligibility for 6 weeks • One F and below a 2.0 = ineligibility until the student can prove they have met grade eligibility.
OSAA Credit Standards: • Prior to Sophomore year = 4 credits • Prior to Junior year = 9.5 credits • Prior to Senior year = 16 credits
Attendance: • No absences on the day of a game • Prearranged absences may be made with the AD or Administration • Any unexcused absences may be grounds for ineligibility for one or more games
School Pride and Sportsmanship: • Behavior that reflects poorly on the activity group, school district, or community at large may be grounds for suspension and/or removal from the activity. • Examples: Law infractions, vandalism, poor sportsmanship, inappropriate cyber imaging, fighting, etc
Chemical Health Violations: First Offense: • Suspension from 33% of regular season contests • Balance will carry over to next season • Completion of Drug and Alcohol assessment / Treatment • Meet with law enforcement • Reconcile with peers as determined by coach
Chemical Health Violations: Second Offense: • Suspension from 50% of regular season contests • Balance will carry over to next season • Completion of Drug and Alcohol assessment / Treatment • Meet with law enforcement • Reconcile with peers as determined by coach
Chemical Health Violations: Third Offense: • Suspension from all sports and activities for one calendar year • Completion of Drug and Alcohol assessment / Treatment • Meet with law enforcement • Gain approval of reinstatement from the school principal
Example Suspension: • 9 Regular Season Football Games • 33% = 3 Games • Student X Gets suspended for the last game of the season • They have completed 11% of their suspension; 22% remains for the next season • 21 Regular Season Basketball Games • 22% of 21 Games = 4.62 • Student will sit 4 games
Chemical Health Violations: Tobacco: • The student will lose competition eligibility for 14 calendar days.
