Plain Style A style of writing marked by simple words in clear order.
-Emphasis on nouns and verbs, the 'action' of the story. -The most important elements of the story, and this is what the Puritans focused on.
Ornate Style A highly elaborate style of writing popular in England and early America in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. -Difficult vocabulary, intricate sentence structure, and complex forms of speech.
-Focused on the descriptionof the action. -Used similes and metaphors to spice up the story.
Archaic Outdated words
Inversion The reversal of word order in writing. “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall”
Couplet Two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme The sun that brief December day Rose cheerless over hills of gray
Predestination A Puritan belief that God decided whether you’d be saved or damned to hell prior to birth
