Choosing The Sex Of Your Baby Brooke Bartelt, Dustin Richards, Kirstie Shakal, & Kylie Shakal
Has sex selection always been around? • Past efforts in selecting the sex of the baby include: • Tricks • Special diets • Certain sex positions • Timing
Tricks • Italian men: biting their wife’s ear • Left ear: daughter • Right ear: son • Swedish men: hanging pants • Left bedpost: girl • Right bedpost: boy • German woodcutters: taking an ax to bed and chanting
Special diets • To conceive a girl: • Eat plenty of highly acidic foods like grapefruit, oranges, lemons • Eat foods high in calcium and magnesium but low in salt and potassium • Theory: an acidic environment kills male-producing sperm, so female-producing sperm have a better chance of making it to the egg
Special diets…(girl cont.) • Both partners should eat lots of fish and veggies • Eat sweets in general • Eat foods high in calcium • Include plenty of foods that are high in magnesium • Also, just by eating less food than if you wanted a boy
Special Diets • To conceive a boy: • Eat more meat — the redder the better • Stick with salty snacks • Dads-to-be: drink soda, especially cola drinks • Foods rich in both potassium and sodium • In general, eat more food
Sex Positions • If you want a boy: • Lie down after sex • Try rear entry position or standing • Focus on HIS pleasure • Give in to HIS seduction • Ladies, sleep to the left of your partner
Sex Positions • If you want a girl: • Try the missionary position or make love with the woman on top. • Focus on HER pleasure • Ladies, take the lead DISCLAIMER: These are all old wives’ tales and should not be taken seriously. If you use this method to select your baby DO NOT come after us if it is wrong, we are just presenting the information.
Timing • The shape of the moon and it’s size • The date (odd an even days)
Sex Selection Methods: • Abortion • PGD (Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis) • IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) • Flow cytometry
Abortion • China: • 10 million abortions induced each year • Son preference • The Chinese one-child policy enhanced this trend • Ultrasound scanning
PGD (Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis) - In-vitro fertilization (IVF) (Required for PGD) - Laser cut at the zona pellucida - Cells are studied by embryologist - Embryos of the desired sex (and with no defects) are then implanted back into the mother
PGD Facts and Concerns Facts: • Cost: IVF and PGD combine to roughly $13,000-17,000. • Success rate of pregnancy: 10-35% • Success of gender selection: 95-98% Concerns: • Unethical (Can select against different gene Combinations) • Religious (“Designer Baby”)
Flow Cytometry • Y-Sperm swim faster than X-sperm • Separation of these sperm • Not foolproof: • 90% for girls • 75% for boys
Reasons couples “choose to choose” the sex of their baby: • Sharla and Shane Miller • Power to choose • Extra time to prepare for baby’s arrival • Getting the gender you want in the desired order • Laura Diamond • Family balance • Economical planning • Items (clothes and toys) can be shared
Reasons against sex selection • High cost • No guarantee • Gender inequity • Creating or reinforcing gender biases • “Messing” with Mother Nature
If efforts in selecting the sex of the baby have always been a part of reproduction, then do medical advancements make these options morally wrong?
