Tezcatlipoca • God of night and discord and magic • Most Known alias– Smoking Mirror • Helped create the present fifth world with the help of Quetzalcoatl • Animal – Jaguar • His significance was that he help create the fifth world by sacrificing his foot to lure out Cipactli to make the earth • Punished Evil men • Appearance - black and a yellow stripe painted across his face. He is often shown with his right foot replaced a snake. A mirror was shown on his chest, and sometimes smoke would come out of it.
Quetzalcoatl • God of wind and a creation god • Most Known alias- Feathered serpent • contributed to the creation of Mankind • Animal - Serpent • His significance is that he mixed his own blood from his penis with clay and bones from mortals who lived during a previous age in order to create the humans of this current age. • Appearance – Blacken face and sometime depicted as a serpent with wings
Tlaloc • God of Rain & Fertility • Was the ruler of the Third World • His Importance has to do with agriculture because if there is no rain there won't be any crops • Human sacrifices were made to him to bring rain. they were drowned. • He is responsible to droughts and floods • Appearance - has jaguar like fangs and large eyes that look like goggles with a mask
Cihuacoatl • motherhood and fertility goddesses • Also helped create the fifth current world • Important to women who are in labor since women who are pregnant are treated like a warrior and like nobility. • She help create the current race of humanity by grinding up bones from the previous ages, and mixing it with his blood. • Appearance – depicted as a fierce skull-faced old woman carrying the spears and shield of a warrior. • mother of Mixcoatl whom she had left
Huitzilopochtli • Main god • god of war, a sun god • A great deal of human sacrifices went to him • Was born from Coatlicue fully armed • Saved his mother after he was born. He killed his sister, Coyolxauhqui, who was trying to kill Coatlicue. And he also killed many of his siblings • His importance is that the Aztecs believed that in 52 years the world will end so they believe that they could give strength to Huitzilopochtli with sacrifices to temporarily halt it. He was also the one who help the Aztec find their new home. • Appearance - His faced was marked with yellow and blue stripes and he carries around the fire serpent Xiuhcoatl with him. He is sometime a hummingbird
Huehueteotl • may be the oldest of the Aztec gods • Appearance - very old man, hunched over with a wrinkled face and a toothless mouth with a fire bowl balanced on his head. • god of warmth and fire • Special sacrifices where held for him having to deal with fire and the heart. • His importance is that he might be the oldest god and thus one of the original gods and he was the one to end the world in 52 years.
Coatlicue • The Mother of Gods, goddess of life and death • gave birth to the moon, stars, and Huitzilopochtli • Got pregnant with Huitzilopochtli by a ball of feathers. • Her importance is that she gave existences to all the gods and goddesses. • Appearance – she wears a skirt of snakes and a necklace of hearts from victims and has a face of two fanged serpents. Has sharp claws in her hands and feet.
Popocatépetl • A warrior and Hero • This warrior was in love with a princess named Iztaccíhuatl and she was also in love with him too. Her father said that he can have Iztaccíhuatl as a wife if he goes out in battle and comes back victorious. Popocatépetl goes to battle, but the father told Iztaccíhuatl that he died in battle. Depressed by this discovery she dies. Popocatépetl was victorious but comes back to find Iztaccíhuatl dead, so he does suicide. The gods took pity and turn Iztaccíhuatl to a snowed mountain for her slumber and turns Popocatépetl into the volcano for his rage. • Many other stories with differences
Tonatiuh • Sun god • Became the fifth world sun • He started out as a lowly god named NANAUTZIN • He demands a lot of sacrifices or he will not move ( Sun) • He became very arrogant and insisted that every god should sacrifice themselves to him if not he will not move. One of the gods tried to shoot an arrow at him but missed and got turned to stone. • His importance is that he is the present sun god and the Aztecs were pretty much tuned in with the sun
CINTEOTL & CHICOMECCATL • Maize gods • Their importance is that they are the maize gods and the Aztec main food was maize. • Appearance- CINTEOTL: young man with yellow skin and has maize in his hair and a black, jagged line across his face. CHICOMECCATL: a headdress, and ears of maize or sometimes she is a young woman with flowers, sometimes a woman whose embrace with death, and sometimes a women with the sun as a shield. • They are honored in order to encourage the growth of corn • Young girls (virgins) would be sacrificed for them
