Babylonian Gods 4000 BCE – 300 BCE
Babylonian Gods In the beginning there was Tiamat (salt water) and Apsu (fresh water). They created other gods. One day the younger gods were being rowdy, so Apsu wanted to destroy them. Tiamat said no, but word got out to the other gods. Ea slew Apsu, and Tiamat chose Kingu as her new consort, and gave him magic tablets that had belonged to other gods. This irritated the other gods, so they convinced Marduk to attack Tiamat. Marduk battled Tiamat, and when she opened her mouth to swallow him, he unleashed a great wind into her belly, which distended. He then shot an arrow into her bloated belly and killed her. He split her body in two, one half becoming the firmament to hold back her waters, and the other becoming the earth. Marduk made the first humans from the blood of Kingu.
