Demand Side Energy – FY09 2,674,000 MMBtu consumed by buildings (1.34 Million pots of coffee) $82.5M spent on energy 153,000 Btu / GSF (NCSU 177,274 Btu / GSF)
Commitments to Conserve • NC Session Law 546 (SB 668) – 2007 • “The energy consumption …shall be reduced by twenty percent (20%) by 2010 and thirty percent (30%) by 2015…” • Climate Neutrality by mid century • Coal free by 2020 • Operate healthy and efficient buildings
Group created in March, 2008 • Functions • Energy & water conservation • Commissioning • Remote monitoring of HVAC
Energy Management Activities • Past Focus: • Lighting upgrades • HVAC systems tuning on existing buildings (retro-commissioning) • Equipment replacement • Current Focus: • Energy Conservation Measures (ECM) project • Lighting upgrades • Education and Awareness
Energy Conservation Measure (ECM) Project • Cornerstone is the UNC Energy Use Policy • Temperature Standards • Occupancy Schedules • Purchasing Policy • Efficient Construction Practices • Campus Community Involvement • Project started mid-July 2009 • Initial projections: • $4.8M avoided costs • 53,400 metric tons CO2 equivalent reduction • 5500 hrs labor and $150,000 implementation costs
Energy Conservation Measure (ECM) Project • Seven prescriptive measures • Occupancy Scheduling & temperature standards (2 ECMs) • Building system tuning and enhancements (4 ECMs) • Education and Awareness (1 ECM)
ECM Project Results to Date • $3,227,870 avoided utility costs • 327,011 MMBtu Energy Savings • 39,764 MTCDE savings • 22,088,279 gallons of condenser water saved • $206,489 project cost • 9,351 hours to implement
Sustaining the Gain • Fix it DON’T forget it • Making conservation a core UNC value • Continued senior management support • Make conservation relevant to all
Energy Management Tomorrow • Types of projects we plan to be involved in: • ECM program • Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC) • Lab airflow optimization • Lighting upgrades • Education and Awareness
Energy Management Tomorrow • Education and Awareness • Inform (Dashboard) • Provide energy information for students, faculty, staff for reinforcement of conservation related behavior • Provide information for engineers, analysts and technicians and for software based statistical analysis. • Educate on how to affect consumption • Enhance existing programs (RESPC, Green Games, etc) • Provide training to Facilities Services HVAC, plumbers, and electricians • Provide training to building managers • Incentivize different behavior • Implement reward program for measured energy savings by individual or group
