History • 1914 • Frankfurt University was founded by wealthy Frankfurt citizens • 1932 • The university is re-named after Frankfurt’s most famous citizen and becomes Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität. • 1933 to 1945 • The university loses numerous students and over one third of its professors. • 1946The university reopens after the end of World War II. • 1967 • The university becomes a state administered institution by the Hessian government. • 2004 • The university celebrates its 90th anniversary.
