BetoO’rourke Phone interview April 6th 2013 “In order for the Mountainstar group to acquire the team that had to have a plan where they would be ready to play by the 2014 season. This gives the project major time constraints. Mayor Cook and the majority of city council saw the Mountainstar groups plan as a unique opportunity to refocus downtown development around this baseball stadium.” “The stadium and events held their will themselves generate revenue and create jobs both in and around the stadium. I know many of my constituents are very concerned about the vehicular traffic and parking, but these are issues can be effectively addressed with proper city planning when the final project design is approved next month. The reality is that increased traffic downtown means that more people are there to inject cash into the downtown economy, which is good for the city.”
Carlos HisaLt. Govenor YDSP • Carlos Hisa • “I don’t think that the City council went about it the right way they need to present it with true figures and ample time to the people of El Paso”. • “ I hope the city doesn’t go in to financial difficulties because of it”.
Survey • Did you know about the baseball stadium before this survey? • Are you in favor of the construction? • Would you attend a baseball game when the construction is finished? • Please give your opinion on the baseball stadium.
Opinions For the Stadium • “My two cents is that it could help El Paso because El Paso downtown sucks. Every major city has an awesome downtown that is center of nightlife.” • “Triple A is fun to watch, and its about time El paso does something to make the city more exciting. Everyone always complains that there's nothing to do and at least now there will be. And it'll help make downtown a better place.” • “I would have liked to see it build in another location but it is a nice way to bring our community together.” • “I think it’s a good idea to bring more business and tourism to El Paso since nothing else seems to be bringing people to this area.” • “It will take a lot of time and money but I’m pretty sure that it the long term it will pay off.” • “I’m for it. This potentially could aid in the revitalization of downtown that I would love to see.”
Opinions against the Stadium • “It was definitely the wrong place to build a stadium, I live right across from where its gonna be and traffic is gonna be terrible which means i'll probably will have to park a couple blocks away from my own place whenever there is a game.” • “A good idea in a bad spot - they should either tear down Cohen stadium and put the new stadium there or build it near Cohen stadium. Putting a big field in an area without enough parking or streets that can handle the extra traffic is just a bad idea.” • “It is a waste of money and in a bad location. If they are going to spend money to do something good, spend it on something worthwhile.” • “ I agree with EL Paso trying to Expand. However I disagree at the way the whole situation was handled. The Demolition of buildings is something I don’t agree with. El Paso Is a big City . They could have purchased other pieces of land to avoid such an expensive Project. • “ The Construction Process was handled incorrectly by city officials. It seems more of a personal interest for a few rather than to help the community.” • “The approach and marketing strategy were poorly executed and the revenue forecasts are not enough to convince me as a taxpayer that this was the best option for the city compared to other opportunities. I do not agree with the Fast track approach to this endeavor and ignoring taxpayer sentiment.”
Project Difficulties • Failure to acquire responses on Facebook • Small Survey to accommodate time • Door to Door survey poor results • Many people did not answer the door • Small group/ poor funding • More resources could have helped research data.
Team opinions:Alan Arredondo • I have mixed feelings concerning the revitalization project. • I agree that the city’s downtown area needs drastic improvements to promote entertainment, I don’t know how well a baseball stadium will do to begin the revitalization • For example, projected average spending per person is about $42 per game, with 70 home games. I don’t believe people will spend that average, or even fill the stadium
Team opinions: Anthony Ayo • I see the baseball stadium as a step forward for the city of El Paso. El Paso seems to have gotten stuck in the past and doest really seem to be doing a lot to move forward. The most recent activities forward have been the construction of the new mall and the destruction of ASARCO. I don’t think these are enough though. El Paso needs real change and a baseball stadium is a nice step forward. I still don’t think it is enough. Many people disagree with the way the baseball stadium was enacted. The way I see it, it was the best way to go about the baseball stadium in order to get around the bureaucracy. I look forward to the baseball stadium and the hopeful future it brings to this city.
Team opinions: Fernando Villar • The city had to move fast to get this deal going, we could have had Six Flags and Seaworld in the 80’s and we passed. San Antonio approved the attractions instead and now it has a booming tourism economy.Although the project seemed to move forward quickly and many people feel slighted, I think that city leaders are acting in the best interest of the city.
Team opinions: Rick Quezada • I think that the baseball field is not a good idea. The process was poorly plan in my opinion and the people of El Paso weren't really given a chance to voice there opinions on a timely manner .
Team opinion:Cassanova • I am on the semi undecided side. I understand why this needs t happen and support the goals of the project but I don’t like the means to the end.
Team opinions: Michael arellano • I fall under the undecided category. I like the chance the city is taking but it must prove that this baseball team will be more productive towards the city than the Diablo’s were. If it is not, I consider this project a failure.
