I can’t put a figure on this, but it would be significant. You don’t always know what spin-offs might come from the work graduates do”. Whilst I have a graduate that is doing engagement activities, it frees the time of my energy manager to work on technical fixes and find more savings. The biggest benefit from my role was the increased level of engagement achieved between my department and the staff and student body.

24. Installation of Low Energy UPSUniversity of St. Andrews • Supporting comments • Power Utilisation Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2 - probably the best in the sector. (PUE = total energy into a data centre : energy delivered to IT equipment) • PUE of 1.2 is only achievable without mechanical cooling, therefore free cooling controls are installed. • UPS has highest efficiency when at full capacity. Modular system is automatically optimised. • Energy calculations based on run hours and energy use • Electricity at 8.3p/kW at time of design • Carbon reduction & fuel rate fluctuations further justifies change • Salix has also financed Verdiem power saving software on a 1,000 PCs, with a 0.9 year payback. • We now educate all our suppliers about Salix so that they can propose innovative ideas to us.
