SECTION3.3Angles Formed by Transversals VOCABULARY Transversal Corresponding Angles Alternate Interior Angles Alternate Exterior Angles Same-Side Interior Angles LEARNING TARGETS: Students will be able to identify corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles, and same-side interior angles.
NOTE: Today is a big vocabulary day! It is important that you take good notes so that when we introduce new Theorems about these vocabulary words they will make sense.
Vocabulary • TRANSVERSAL: • A line that intersects two or more coplanar lines at different points. • For instance, in the diagram below, the blue line t is a transversal. • The angles formed by two lines and a transversal have special names.
Angle Pairs As stated before, angles formed by two lines and a transversal have special names. We will use the diagram below to help us identify all of the different types of angle pairs.
Vocabulary • CORRESPONDING ANGLES: • Angles that occupy corresponding (matching) positions.
Vocabulary • ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES: • Angles that lie between (on the inside of) the two lines and are on the opposite sides of the transversal.
Vocabulary • ALTERNATE EXTERIOR ANGLES: • Angles that lie outside of the two lines and are on the opposite sides of the transversal.
Vocabulary • SAME-SIDE INTERIOR ANGLES: • Angles that lie between (on the inside of) the two lines and are on the same side of the transversal.
