Skin End Point Titration(SET):-
Also called an intra dermal test, this skin end point titration (SET) uses intradermal injection of allergens at increasing concentrations to measure allergic response.
Skin prick testing is the golden standard for detection of allergen-specific IgE.
4. Skin Allergy Test(in Vivo test)Skin End Point Titration(SET):- To prevent a severe allergic reaction, the test is started with a very dilute solution.
After 10 minutes, the injection site is measured to look for growth of wheal, a small swelling of the skin. Two millimeters of growth in 10 minutes is considered positive.
5. INVESTIGATIONS IN ALLERGIES Skin End Point Titration(SET):-
If 2 mm of growth is noted, then a second injection at a higher concentration is given to confirm the response.
The end point is the concentration of antigen that causes an increase in the size of the wheal followed by confirmatory whealing.
If the wheal grows larger than 13 mm, then no further injection are given since this is considered a major reaction.
6. INVESTIGATIONS IN ALLERGIES Skin Allergy Test
Prick test or scratch test : Pricking the skin with a needle or pin containing a small amount of the allergen. Usually used to identify allergies to dust, pollen, animal dander, food.
Patch test : Applying a patch to the skin usually on the back, where the patch contains the allergen. Usually for medicines, latex, preservatives, fragrances, hair dyes, resins and various heavy metals.
7. Disadvantages of Skin Allergy Test Skin tests, although fairly reliable for the detection of IgE to environmental allergens, are not well correlated with food allergy signs and symptoms.
8. INVESTIGATIONS IN ALLERGIESRAST Test (in Vitro test) A RAST test (short for radioallergosorbent test) is a blood test used to determine to what substances a person is allergic.
To detect specific IgE antibodies to suspected or known allergens. IgE is the antibody associated with Type I allergic response: for example, if a person exhibits a high level of IgE directed against pollen, the test may indicate the person is allergic to pollen (or pollen-like) proteins. A person who has outgrown an allergy may still have a positive IgE years after exposure.
9. ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) Enzyme Immunosorbent Assay helps to test the presence of Ig G antibodies in patients to numerous food allergens.
