Studying selected landfills in Jordan and assessing nearby groundwater quality Royal Scientific Society- Ministry of Environment Contract No.95/2007 RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Study Objectives • To determine solidwaste dumped at each site (qualitative and quantitative) • To assess groundwater quality in vicinity of the selected landfills • To develop a sensitivity and risk maps for each site • Develop a remediation plan for each site RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Selected landfills • Alukider landfill • Almafraq landfill • Alrussifa landfill • Alhumra landfill RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Mafraq landfill RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
General-Mafraq • Mafraq landfill is located 25km east of Mafraq city, occupying an area of 380 dunums. The average rainfall at the area of the landfill is 100mm/year which indicate that the landfill is locate in a dry climate area. The landfill is placed on a volcanic area with 2-3m of top soil RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Characterization of Solidwaste • In order to determine the % by weight of solidwaste dumped at mafraq landfill , 18 samples were taken from the incoming waste using the quartering method RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project

Alukider landfill RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Alukider -general • Alukider landfill is 27 km east of Irbid city and 1.5 km from Syrians borders, occupying an area of 806 dunums and used to dump (650-800) ton of Solidwaste daily in addition to 1100 m3 of liquid waste RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Waste characterization • In order to determine the % by weight of solidwaste dumped at the site and because of the large area served by the landfill 70 sample were taken using quartering method to represent the whole are served by the dump site which include mainly governorates of Irbid, Ajloun and Jerash RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project

Medical waste • During the process of separation of domestic waste received by alukider landfill, unfortunatelyfew compactors and grinders were loading medical waste from private and public hospitals in the north region. Russifa landfill RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Russifa - general • Russifa landfill was started at 1989 over an area of 1400 dunums serving 50% of Jordan population until its closure by the end of 2002 RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Solidwaste quantities • The landfill was receiving around 2200 ton/day of solidwaste, according to biogas company 12 million ton of waste was dumped at the site. • The amount of waste dumped at the site was estimated to be 11.2 million ton using average waste per day of 2200 ton and 14 years of operation. RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Al-Humra landfill RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
General • The landfill is located 6 km to the north-west of Maghareeb area in the Salt municipality over an area of 200 dunums. • There are a number of houses and farms close to the site, nearest house is 500 m away from the site. RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
Solidwaste quantities • 20-37 trucks empty their load at the site, capacity of the trucks is between 5-16 ton which means that the landfill receives about 300 ton of waste daily RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project

Next three months • Solidwaste characterization for humra landfill. • Sensitivity and risk maps for Humra and Ukider. • Re- characterization of Solidwaste for aukider and Mafraq (summer conditions) • One soil sample around humra landfill • Density and moisture samples from all sites RSS – MoEnv Solid Waste Assessment Project
