Introduction The Gyan Burman Liver Unit (GBLU) was established in 2003 by Mr. Pradip Burman. It was created to honor the memory of the late Gyan Burman. Gyan Burman was known for his dedication and hard work, setting high standards for his siblings and colleagues.
The main aims of the GBLU are: To support research into hepatobiliary diseases, especially those prevalent in India. To start an eponymous fellowship in hepatobiliary surgery for young surgeons from various parts of the world. To promote liver transplantation in India. To organize the annual Gyan Burman Oration to be delivered by one of the world’s foremost liver surgeons. To help poor patients who cannot afford medical treatment.
Establishment of GBLU The Gyan Burman Liver Unit (GBLU) was established at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi by Pradip Burman. It was initiated under the leadership of Dr. Samiran Nundy. GBLU was created to honor Gyan Burman's legacy and contribute to liver disease treatment and research.
GBLU’s Contributions Under the guidance of Mr. Pradip burman GBLU initiated a fellowship in hepatobiliary surgery for young surgeons globally. The annual "Gyan Burman Oration" event is organized, featuring world-renowned liver surgeons as speakers. Past speakers include Henri Bismuth, S.T. Fan, Abhinav Humar, Yuman Fong, Sir Roy Calne, Pierre Clavien, and Dirk Gouma.
Impact of GBLU on Liver Transplantation in India GBLU by Mr. Pradip Burman played a major role in initiating the liver transplant program in India. The first national meeting in 2003 gathered 50 surgeons to discuss improving liver transplant outcomes. Since then, 73 liver transplant centers have been established in India. In 2017 alone, approximately 1600 liver transplants were performed in India. Ganga Ram Hospital became a pioneer in liver transplants, with over 70% of procedures done by GBLU-trained surgeons.
9th Gyan Burman Oration in 2024 During the 9th Gyan Burman Oration, Pradip Burman proudly shared that GBLU has trained approximately 115 Indian doctors and international fellows, contributing significantly to healthcare excellence. Since 2017, they have facilitated over 1600 transplants in India, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to accessible healthcare for all.
