Joe Smith Student’s Presentation How Numbers can be deceiving ….
Let’s evaluate the data set • Joe Smith’s Math Test Scores: • 72, 78, 80, 74, 72 • Calculate the mean, median, mode, and range • What do the numbers mean? • What grade should I get in Math?
Mean- you add the numbers and then divide by the quantity, its sometimes called Average • 72+78+80+74+72 = 376 • Then you divide by 6. (376/6) • Your mean = 75.2
Median-put them in order & pick the middle one • 72, 78, 80, 74, 72 • Put them in order (least to greatest) • 72, 72, 74, 78, 80 • Since 5 items exist , the middle one would be 74 • The Median for the data set is 74.
Range- get the largest one and take away the smallest • 72, 72, 74, 78, 80 • The largest is 80 & the smallest would be 72. • Thus the range is 80 – 72 = 8
Analysis: • My Math Test Scores had the following: • Mean= 75.2 • Median= 74 • Mode = 72 • Range = 8 • My test scores were clustered together, therefore my teacher could use mean as a good measurement of my work. I would get a “C’.
Mode- which item or items do you see more often. • Note you don’t have to have a mode, none of the numbers repeat • Also you can have more than one mode. • 72, 72, 74 , 78, 80 • Look and you can see two “72” therefore the mode equals = 72
Let’s add 1 more test score Original 5 test Six test scores • 72, 72, 74, 78, 80 • My mean= 75.2 • My median = 74 • My mode = 72 • My range = 8 • 72,72,74,78,80 & 100 • Now let’s see the changes if any • New mean = 79.3 • New median = 76 • No change, mode = 72 • New range = 18
Analysis • An outlier, a data item that doesn’t really belong, can affect your mean, median, mode and range. • Getting 100% on the last test really bumped my mean to almost a “B” (79.3) but it didn’t drastically change my median. • CONCLUSION: Statistics can be skewed deliberating depending on what you wish to show. I’m a B math student if I want to have mean as an indicator. (Even though I received 4 C’s in math).
