The story so far… • 1865: mining enginer Fredrik Idestam sets up his wood pulp mill in Finland • Second mill next to Nokianvirte river name of the company: Nokia Ab 1871
1898: Eduard Polón founds Finnish Rubber Works (later Nokia’s rubber business) • 1912: ArvidWickström sets up Finnish Cable Works, the foundation of Nokia’s cable and electronics business • 1963: radio telephones for the army and emergency services – Nokia’s 1st foray into telecommunications • 1967 : Nokia Ab, Finnish Cable Works and Finnish Rubber Works officially merge
The mobile era begins • 1979: radio telephone company MobiraOy • 1981: Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) service (International roaming) • 1982: 1st car phone • 1987: MobiraCityman : 1st handheld mobile phone („Gorba”)
1987: GSM (Global System for Mobile communications): European standard for digital mobile technology • 1992: Nokia launches its first digital handheld GSM phone, the Nokia 1011 • Strategicdecision:manufacturing mobile phones and telecommunications systems
