  1. T5 Hypervelocity Shock Tunnel H. G. Hornung^, J. E. Shepherd^ N. J. Parziale*, J. S. Jewell* California Institute of Technology ^Professors *Grad Students http://www.galcit.caltech.edu/T5/ GALCIT - T5 Hypervelocity Shock Tunnel

  2. T5 Background • T5 facility at GALCIT is a free piston shock tunnel • Uniqueness of the facility is the ability to study the chemical and thermodynamic non-equilibrium effects relevant in high speed flight • Capable of producing flows of up to specific reservoir enthalpy of 25 MJ/kg, pressure of 100 MPa, and temperature 10000 K • Recent work for NASA includes heat transfer data on the CEV and MSL forebodies GALCIT - T5 Hypervelocity Shock Tunnel

  3. Flow Visualization From T5 Shock wave interaction in hypervelocity flow. Air flow is left to right. Image is a holographic shadowgraph. Thesis work by S. R. Sanderson. Hypervelocity flow over a sphere. CO2 flow is left to right. Image is a finite fringe differential interferogram. Thesis work by C. Y. Wen. Transition on a 5 degree half angle cone in hypervelocity flow. Nitrogen flow is right to left. Image is a near-resonantly enhanced shadowgraph. Thesis work P. Germain. GALCIT - T5 Hypervelocity Shock Tunnel

  4. Some Current Work in T5 Near-resonantly enhanced focused schlieren deflectometry of hypervelocity boundary layers. Ongoing thesis work by N. J. Parziale. Hypervelocity boundary layer transition delay by CO2 in vibrational non-equilibrium. Ongoing thesis work by J. S. Jewell GALCIT - T5 Hypervelocity Shock Tunnel
