(according to Catholic theology) To understand Christ, should see Mary’s essential role • “Mary has … (an) essential reference to the Word of God and, in him and through him, to the history of salvation.” One cannot speak of Christ without an understanding of Mary • To not speak of Mary or diminish her role carries consequences in understanding of Christ’s redemption – fully human – how God can work in us. • “…Only when it touches Mary (is) Christology itself as radical as the faith of the Church requires.” J. Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) Mary fulfills a central role in salvation history • Spoken of as “new Eve”; through Eve comes sin, through Mary comes grace; seen as the most perfect of the human race.

Why is this a difficult question? • Dating the birth of Jesus raises complex questions, unclear answers: • According to Luke, Jesus’ birth was during the reign of Herod the Great, who died 4 B.C. However, Luke also says he was born under Quirinius(during the census), but this was in 7 A.D.; • Dionysius Exiguusdeveloped the “A.D.” system in the 500’s, but misdates Jesus’ birth in 6th century A.D.(this system was popularized by St. Bede the historian). • Conclusion: though we date his birth as the beginning of western calendar (1 A.D.); the actual year is uncertain; • Can situate it going back from Jesus death. It is clear that Jesus’ death was under Pontius Pilate, who was Roman Prefect from 26-36 A.D. in Palestine, and that Luke says Jesus was “about thirty years old when he began his ministry.” Here too, the conclusion is not precise.

Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings What is the Christian teaching of the “Incarnation”? • Notes: • nativity = childbirth (“Nativity Scene”); • incarnation = taking on of human flesh (Reincarnation = soul migrates to new body) • the basic Christian teaching: Jesus is “fully human, fully divine” in the incarnation; • Jesus’ conception is the actual incarnation; the nativity is His bodily, visible presence at birth; • teaching is not that a “human becomes God” but that God “lowers Himself to take on our humanity”
