  4. Denial is when someone makes excuses for their drug use. Enabling is when someone (friend or family member) makes excuses about someone else’s drug use. 3. Denial and Enabling

  5. 4. Drug Abuse Terms • Tolerance: The ability to consume greater and greater amounts of a drug before seeing the same desired effects. • What would be an example?

  6. Terms • Addiction: A progressive disease characterized by loss of control and continued use despite adverse consequences. • What would be an example?

  7. Terms • Withdrawal: The body’s attempt to rebalance itself after prolonged drug use. Symptoms can range from mild to severe to life threatening. • What would be an example?

  8. 5. Tolerance, Addiction, Withdrawal? • How are they interrelated? • A user builds up TOLERANCE, becomes ADDICTED, and can go through WITHDRAWAL when trying to get off the Drug.
