  1. P&E Group Ashwani K. Gupta August 1, 2012

  2. Summary • All TCs are dynamic and energetic in the Propulsion and Energy group • Successful Green Engineering PC • New WG (Pressure Gain Combustion?) approved by NIS on July 31, 2012 • P&E group NEM workshop for transitioning JPC/IECEC to JPC/IECEC Forum • Awards: 4 in Propulsion and 2 in Energy and all TCs gave best paper awards • Ensure that future JPC dates do not to Clash with Intl. Combustion Symposium (CI) and ASME Power conference

  3. Deputy Director Energy David Lilley Deputy Director Air-Breathing Propulsion Jeff Hamstra Deputy Director Rocket & Space Propulsion I-Shih Chang Deputy Director Advanced Propulsion & Technologies Selma Goldstein Green Engineering (GE) PC Jason Slagle/Valerie Lyons Director Propulsion & Energy Ashwani Gupta P&E Organization Aerospace Power Systems TC Terrestrial Energy Systems TC Hybrid Rockets TC Liquid Propulsion TC Solid Rockets TC Electric Propulsion TC Gas Turbine Engines TC High Speed Air Breathing Propulsion TC Air Breathing Propulsion Integration TC Pressure Gain Combustion WG Nuclear & Future Flight Propulsion TC Energetic Components & Systems TC Propellants & Combustion TC

  4. JPC/IECEC and P&E Group • NEM has many of the show case examples JPC has championed over the past 48 years. • Opening high level Plenary and keynote speakers at JPC and IECEC • Panel sessions with key leaders from industry on topics of latest interest to industry • Exhibits with designed good flow of traffic • VIP tour of exhibits • Awards luncheon speaker • Public policy • Steering committee and Planning committee with defined goals and milestones over 24 month planning cycle • No paper no podium and no podium no paper policy • Abstract and paper review for papers at IECEC • Each TC provides metrics on activities for continued improvements of their TC health (started some 15 years ago) • Acknowledge all speakers with a ‘thank you’ note immediately after the conf. • ….

  5. Workshop Question 1: Growth to P&E Forum Question 1: How should we evolve the current JPC/IECEC collocated event to the “Propulsion & Energy Forum” envisioned in the New Event Model? How do we improve the content, increase the value, and grow attendance? Example questions to consider: • How do we best implement the NEM vision; are there radical changes to JPC/IECEC we should consider? • How do we retain/enhance multiple-society involvement (the “Joint” in JPC)? • What other Conferences/Events should we try to align with the P&E Forum? • How do we achieve better ties between the Aeronautics and Space sides of our discipline? • How do we improve Keynote & Plenary Sessions? • How do we enhance the presence of “energy” including Green initiatives? • How do we increase corporate sponsorship?

  6. Workshop Question 2: Support Of Other Forums Question 2: We are committed to developing a premier P&E Forum, but also must support the overall Institute direction on NEM. Other Forums, in particular Aviation and Space, can not be successful without a P&E presence. How do we achieve all these objectives? Example questions to consider: • Are there “out of the box” options we should consider, such as moving the JPC/IECEC event to January to align with the S&T Forum? • Is there a way to rotate or assign support between TC’s such that such that each TC isn’t attempting to support more than two Forums a year? • What is the minimum presence that that would make the Aviation and/or Space Forums attractive to you and your colleagues • Are there innovative ways to participate that we haven’t considered?

  7. 2nd IEEE Energy Tech, May 29-31, 2012, Cleveland • Run by local Cleveland IEEE chapter (www.EnergyTech2012.org ) • 2012 Program: https://www.xcdsystem.com/energyTech2012/program.pdf • General chair: Wyatt Newman • Sponsored by: • NASA • The Cleveland Foundation • IEEE Cleveland Section • IEEE Power and Energy Society Cleveland Chapter • NSF • 120 papers (180 submitted) • Attendance: 200 • TAC approval of this conf to be part of 2014 IECEC/JPC Forum

  8. Conclusion of P&E Response to “Slide 28” Input solicited per VP TAC direction from 12 TCs & 1 PC for all three involvement tiers (Plenary, Integration, Discipline). Summary of results: O = “organizer” – primary responsibility for Tier planning; actively engaged in track, session, panel development and paper and speaker recruiting within Tier (note where yearly alternating schedule might be desired) S = “support” – review abstracts, provide other support as requested within Tier N/A = “not applicable” – Forum Tier does not touch committee area of interest Details • Conclusions: • Universal Preference For Involvement with P&E Forum (Legacy JPC) • S&T Forum (Legacy ASM) Also Of High Interest • Much Lesser Interest Expressed For Aviation, Space & Defense Forums • Unlikely That Proposed Aviation/Space Support Is “Acceptable”… • If Not, We Do Not Yet Have A Closed Solution!
