Phi Beta Kappa • Oldest and most widely known academic honor society • Excellence in the liberal arts and sciences • About 10% of the nation’s colleges and universities have a chapter (276 institutions) • At least 10% of art and science faculty must have gained Phi Beta Kappa distinction • Lengthy application due November 1, 2009
Phi Beta Kappa Application review based on Siena’s ability: • To recruit and retain good students • To prepare students for graduate study • To make appropriate academic demands on those enrolled, including opportunities for honors studies • To develop and maintain faculty whose preparation and scholarly activity give evidence that they are able to establish and assess those demands • To maintain financial resources sufficient to support the college’s academic programs • To take precautions to prevent issues of governance, athletics, religion or politics from subverting the integrity of the college’s dedication to liberal learning
