General Purpose Software These are the most popular software and are not specific to any particular business or organization. They can be used by most people. Egs. A teacher using a spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel) package to prepared students’ end of term reports or using a word processing (Microsoft Word) package to write letters to parents.
Specialised Software A specialised software is written for a specific task rather than for a broad application area. These are designed to work in a particular field. E.g. In the areas of medicine, airline booking, accountancy, air traffic controlling, architecture, banking.
Customised Software This is a general purpose software that has been modified to better meet the needs of an individual or Organisation.
Custom Written Software This is a software that is written to meet the specific needs of a company. The solution is tailored to achieve the company’s goals, based on their requirements. These are written by programmers. They are also called bespoke or tailor made software.
Integrated Software An integrated software package is a set of related programs combined in a unified package that allows data to be transferred easily between the programs. A basic integrated package contains a word processor, spreadsheet, database, communications and graphics presentation programs. Egs. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Works, Lotus Smartsuite
