  2. Why Patricia Polacco? • Storyteller - personally intrigued by oral and written tradition • Both author and illustrator • Eastern Europe culture and traditions • Stories from family and heritage • Most books have interactions between young and elderly person

  3. A bit of history • Born in 1944 • Mother’s family Russian Jews, and Father’s family Irish • Both grandparents storytellers • Dyslexic - didn’t learn to read until 14 years old • Began writing at 41 years old

  4. Firetalking • Ukranian grandmother called telling stories around the fire “Firetalking” • Patricia and brother would always ask at end of story, “Is this story true?” • Babushka replied, “Of course it is true, but it may not have happened.”

  5. Keeping quilt • Story of her mother’s family coming to United States • Quilt made from mother’s outgrown dress, babushka, and other old family clothing • Still used for weddings, table cloths, & welcoming babies • Black/white illustrations with quilt in color

  6. Rechenka’s Eggs • Goose, Rechenka, accidently tips over basket of lovely painted eggs • Begins laying painted eggs to replace broken ones • Ukranian babushka taught her to make Pysanky eggs • Gorgeous illustrations

  7. Uncle Vova’s Tree • Christmas memories • Russian traditions • Tree decorated with Pysanky eggs • Meal of kutya • Sleigh ride • Decorating tree outside for birds; tree symbolizes “roots” planted when uncle and aunt came to US

  8. Mrs. Katz and Tush • Mrs. Katz emigated from Poland • Bonds with Larnel over a runt kitten who needs a home • Discover they both have a lot in common (dealing with prejudice) • Celebrate Passover together

  9. Babushka Stories • Babushka’s Doll • Babushka only played with doll once • Granddaughter Natasha learns a lesson • Babushka’s Mother Goose • Reshaped tales from Aesop, Mother Goose, and Moldavian Folk tales • Babushka’s Baba Yaga • Russian Folklore • Baba Yaga becomes babushka
