The kinds of Deviation: • Syntactic or Grammatical Deviation: In this kind of deviation, poets disregards the rules of sentence. e.g: 1- “fastened me flesh” 2- “A grief ago” Dylan Thomas 3- “the achieve of, the mastery of the things” Hopkins, The Windhover
2- Lexical Deviation: This is found in the form of Neologism or the invention of new words For example: The prefix (fore) is applied to verbs like see and tell. It is a normal process. But T. S. Eliot uses the term (foresuffer)
3- Grapholgical Deviation: This is the deviation in which poets disregard the rules of writing. They write the words in such a way without any boundaries in lines, space,or rhyme. E. E, Cumming “ the live seekers of truth follow no path all path lead where truth is here”
4- Phonological Deviation This is the deviation in sound which is done deliberately in regard to the rhyme. Just to keep the poems rhymed. Wind (N) /wind/ Wind (V) /waind/
5- Deviation of Historical period In this kind of deviation, poet use archaic words which are no longer used in daily language. They do so in order to enhance the aesthetical value of Poem. e.g. O Rose thou art sick.
Why the poets use Deviation? 1- The poets use Deviation to make us search beyond the linguistic description of poem to get nearer to the literary meaning. 2- Every poet wants to be famous by using Deviation
