  8. You have identified many different interpretations of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. There are also many different interpretations of the American West: DIFFERENT AMERICAN WESTS, 1840-1900. (Not: The American West). What is the American west?

Interpretations over time Pre 1980- 1930: The American West is a wilderness which needs to be ‘tamed’. 1930-1960: Hollywood’s love affair with the Western based on ideas such as ‘Germ theory’- claims that the American West was directly shaped by European institutions. 1960- 2000+: micro-histories which focus on previously neglected groups e.g. Women and Native Americans.
