Interpretations over time Pre 1980- 1930: The American West is a wilderness which needs to be ‘tamed’. 1930-1960: Hollywood’s love affair with the Western based on ideas such as ‘Germ theory’- claims that the American West was directly shaped by European institutions. 1960- 2000+: micro-histories which focus on previously neglected groups e.g. Women and Native Americans.
