  3. B. Why China eagers to unify Taiwan? － Vital strategic interests － To prevent regime change － To protect reforms

  4. C. Capability upgrade modernization priorities － Active defense based on achieving informationalization of joint operation － Fight and win a local war under high-tech conditions － Priorities focus on 2nd Artillery, Navy and Air Force － Achieving long range precision strike capability

  5. D. PLA Budget 1995-2006

Missile Force Modernization － Strategic nuclear counter strike or retaliation capability a. develop MRV/MIRV solid-fuel MRBMS and ICBMs such as DF21 and DF-31, DF-31A b. develop new type of nuclear-powered SSBNs(094) － Tactical preemptive strike capability a. develop improved SRBMs such as DF-9 and DF-11 b. develop and deploy new type of land attack cruise missiles (LACM)

Naval Modernization － Acquisition of major surface combatant ships such as Sovrememny-class DDGS Type 52B DDGS Type 52C Aegis DDGS Type 54 frigates － Possible development of indigenous air craft carrier － Acquisition of new type of submarines such as Kilo class (project 036,636EM) Sung class 039A Yuan class 041 Type 093 nuclear-powered attack sub.

Air Force Modernization － Develop offensive / defensive doctrines － Acquisition of advanced fighters such as SU-27, SU-30, J-10A, FC1 etc. JH-7A － Acquisition of advanced AA missiles and precision guidance munitions － Developing C4ISTAR (command, control, communication computers, intelligence, surveillance, target-acquisition and reconnaissance)

  9. H. Future trend of modernization － To achieve information operation capability － To develop joint operation capability － To speed up space programs to assist integration of above mentioned modern advanced war fighting capabilities
