  1. Providing Library Access to Patrons

  2. Moving Forward… Option 1: Administrator will need to select staff member(s) to attend training to learn how to operate Library Manager, preferably a trained Teacher Librarian or Library Aide. In addition, the person receiving training needs to be retained as part of your school staff for the 2011 – 12 school year. Option 2: School administrator will keep Library open without in-house library staff. Administrator will need to select a person to be responsible for setting up the Integrated Library/Textbook System in a Kiosk mode for check-in/check-out of books as well as manage reports necessary for library operation. Option 3: School administrator will select a staff member to be responsible for both library circulation and textbook inventory. This identified staff member would be trained to operate both the Library and Textbook Manager.

  3. Access Levels Full access: Circulate books, clear fines, check patron status, override blocked accounts, run reports, import/export books, create copy id/patron barcodes, edit book information, perform inventory, run collection statistics. Limited access: Circulate books

  4. OPTION 1 This model utilizes the District’s previous library model where the teacher librarian or the library aide manages the library automation system. Librarian is not cross-trained in Textbook manager. NOTE TO SELF…NEED MORE INFORMATION!!!

  5. Option 2 This option will keep the library open without purchasing a teacher librarian or a certified library aide. Basic circulation will be available through teachers (with LZ certification, and Self-Service Kiosks). The support of ITLSS will be integral in maintaining and sustaining libraries under this option, because schools will be operating under limited-access privileges. The administrative designee is not cross-trained in Textbook manager.

  6. Learning Zone Certification To acquire limited access privileges: Teachers will sign up for a Webinar course posted on the Learning Zone. Once the assessment is passed, LIMITED access to Destiny will be provided. School sites will need ITLSS to run necessary reports.

  7. Option 3 This option is the model in which the District is encouraging. Select a staff member to be trained to run both the library and textbook manager Staff member will be given Full ACCESS to Destiny Under this option, ITLSS will be able to move school libraries into utilizing virtual libraries: Digital Resources, eBooks, eReaders, 24/7 access to the school library. “LIBRARY 2.0”

  8. How Virtual Libraries Will Look in YOUR Library… Integrated Library and Textbook Automation System (inter-library and textbook loan capabilities) Online Catalog Safe Web searches/Webpath Express Resources for teachers and students Daily digital newspapers subscriptions Digital Library Subscriptions eBooks eReaders (Kindles, Nooks, iPads) “LIBRARY 2.0”

  9. Food for thought… “Libraries have always been thought of as a kind of "temple of books" ... a place you can go to for peace and quiet, a place to read and think. They are intricate part of the fabric that pulls a community together. But if they are to be relevant in the future they will have to make space for themselves in the digital community as well” (Neary 2011).

  10. OPTION 3 means… Virtual Library is within our Reach… “These days, you don't have to go anywhere near a library to check out an e-book. You can download one to your digital device in a matter of seconds. And there's no more pesky overdue notices — the e-book simply disappears from your device when your time is up” (Neary 2011).

  11. Accessing the school’s catalog Library Manager is a web-based application, accessed through an Internet Browser. Web address: http://destiny.lausd.net/ LAUSD supports the following browsers: Internet Explorer 7.0, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari.
