New Castle Idling Reduction Program Dave Schroeder and Lauren McDonell New Castle CAAC
Idling Is Common When: • it’s cold and people warm up their vehicles • people stop to check the mail • parents are waiting to pick up kids from school • people run into the grocery store, post office, convenience store etc. • people go through a drive-through • in some cases, police cars or industrial vehicles may need to idle – is this true in New Castle?
Idling Education Program Designed to: • Protect public health (especially children and seniors) • Protect air quality • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions (CAP) • Conserve fuel, protect vehicles
The Truth about Idling • If a vehicle is going to be idling for more than 10 seconds, it is more fuel-efficient to turn off the engine. • Today’s cars and trucks don't need to be warmed up. Except in below-zero conditions, you can just start the engine and drive off.- Click and Clack (Car Talk)
Health • Particles in air pollution from idling worsen asthma and other respiratory symptoms, especially in children. - Asthma Regional Council
Environment • Car exhaust contains: nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). • An hour of automobile idling releases nearly 4 pounds of CO2 into the air.
What you can do • Take pride in our beautiful town and the health of our community • Sign a pledge to reduce your idling • Agree to help set a new example for colleagues and the public • Help spread the word about idling
